What is the most important summer day in Italy? Of course, August 15th, “Ferragosto”.
August 15th is when Roman Catholics celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven – the day when Catholics believe Mary ascended to heaven “body and soul” after the end of her life on earth.
However, it was a holiday in Italy long before it took on a religious significance. It originates from Feriae Augusti, the festival of emperor Augustus, who made the 1st of August a day of rest after weeks of hard work on the agricultural sector.
Ferragosto is the height of the Italian summer so at La Sovana, according to the tradition we celebrate with a huge party. Great buffet, roast “Porchetta”, live music and firework.
